The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026 was recently passed in the Lok Sabha, despite protests and concerns raised across the country.
What’s changed?
The amendment significantly alters the 2019 law, especially around how gender identity is recognised.
It narrows down the definition of who’s recognised as transgender, potentially excluding:
• trans men
• trans women
• genderfluid people

The bill introduces requirements for medical certification.
For many, this creates barriers:
financial, emotional, societal, familial, and personal.

What happens next?
The bill now moves to the Rajya Sabha.
This isn't over.
